Sumit Nagal Biography

Sumit Nagal is an Indian tennis player. He rose to fame when he made his Grand Slam debut against Roger Federer. He is also the sixth Indian to win a Junior Grand Slam. In September 2020, Sumit Nagal became the first Indian in seven years to win a singles main draw match at a Grand Slam after he defeated United States’ Bradley Klahn 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round of the US Open.

Sumit Nagal Biography

Sumit was born on August 16, 1997, in the Haryana village of Jaitpur. Sumit lacked a sporting background because his father was a teacher and his mother was a housewife. Cricket, on the other hand, does not require an invitation in India. Sumit’s favourite sport, like that of every other kid, was cricket.

Suresh Nagal, Sumit’s father, did not want his son to blend in with the crowd; instead, he wanted him to stand out. And it was with this in mind that he took Sumit to a local sports club, where he first watched and played tennis — at the age of eight!

Sumit’s passion for tennis overtook his love of cricket, and the eight-year-old began practising on a daily basis. Just two years later, Mahesh Bhupati’s ‘Mission 2018’ tryouts — a campaign to create India’s first Grand Slam singles champion by 2018 – presented him with the perfect opportunity.
