Who is CVC Capital Partners?
CVC Capital Partners is a Luxembourg-based private equity firm. CVC Capital, which was founded in 1981, has undertaken approximately 5,00,000 investments in a variety of industries and nations. As of 2019, the company’s assets were projected to be worth $75 billion, and it operated out of 24 locations across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
CVC Capital – A prominent sports investor
CVC Capital has a long history of funding sporting endeavours, so investing in sports is nothing new for the private equity firm. CVC Capital has a strong track record of investing successfully in sports, ranging from football to motorsport to rugby and now cricket. This isn’t even the company’s first effort into the Ahmedabad franchise this year.
CVC Capital had previously invested $ 3.2 billion in Spanish football’s top league, La Liga, in August 2021. According to the agreement, CVC will own a 10.95 percent stake in the league for 50 years.
For decades, CVC Capital has been investing in the sports business. CVC bought Dorna Sports, a MotoGP team, for $80 million in a leveraged buyout in 1998 and sold it for $473.4 million in 2006.
In 2005, they invested $1.7 billion in Formula One, which they later sold to Liberty Media for $4.4 billion in 2016. It’s worth noting that the company’s exit from the sport was acrimonious and contentious, with F1 fans and experts blaming the private equity firm of taking as much money from the sport as possible while their investment remained small.
This year, they also invested $510 million in Six Nations Rugby and $300 million in Volleyball World as part of their development capital. Other potential future investments by the corporation include claims that CVC Capital is planning to invest in World Rugby. They’re also said to be in talks to buy a piece of South African Rugby.
