Career

Maana Patel began swimming at the age of eight, when her mother enrolled her in a summer swim class at Gujarat Vidyapeeth Swimming in 2008. Maana’s appetite was bad as a child, and she believed that “you eat adequately after you play in the water.” Maana did not enjoy swimming at first, but as time went on, she became more interested in the sport.Over the course of two years, Maana Patel began competing in numerous club events against swimmers of a higher age group. Maana Patel began swimming professionally in 2011 under the tutelage of Kamlesh Nanavati, competing in a variety of state and national championships. In 2011, she earned her first national medal.

Maana Patel set her maiden national record in the 200m backstrokes during the 40th Junior National Aquatics Championship 2013 in Hyderabad, surpassing Shikha Tandon’s national record of 2:26.41s set at the Asian Age Group Championship in Tokyo in August 2009. Maana Patel was India’s fastest female backstroker in the 50m, 100m, and 200m at the age of 13.
