In 1916, Maharaj Charan Singh was born in his mother’s house in Moga, Ferozepur, Punjab. Sardar Harbans Singh Grewal, his father, was the youngest child of Maharaj Sawan Singh Ji, also known as the Great Master. At the age of 22, Charan Singh graduated from Gordon College in Rawalpindi with a B.A. He then continued his education by enrolling in law school at Punjab University in Lahore. He began establishing his own legal firm in the town of Sirsa, close to the family home, after earning his LL.B. in 1942. The daughter of Rao Bahadur Shiv Dhyan Singh, Harjeet Kaur, was the bride in a marriage arranged by the Great Master in 1943.
Maharaj Charan Singh Ji Biography
Maharaj Charan Singh (1916-1990) was the Satguru and leader of Radha Soami Satsang Beas, Dera Baba Jaimal Singh, after being appointed by the previous Beas guru, Maharaj Jagat Singh, in 1951. Charan Singh was the Beas Sangat’s guru for over four decades, until his death from heart failure in 1990 at the age of 73. He had previously practiced law in Hisar and Sirsa, India, prior to his appointment in 1951. He was an initiate of Maharaj Sawan Singh, his paternal grandfather, and Maharaj Jagat Singh’s predecessor. Charan Singh delegated his succession and guru duties to his initiate and nephew Baba Gurinder Singh.
The Dera had expanded by the time Maharaj Ji was named the Satguru, and there were several Satsang locations across India. He was able to make modifications to the administrative structure that would successfully transition the company into the rapidly evolving modern world because of his practical grasp of administrative issues. In 1957, Maharaj Ji transferred all of the Dera’s assets to the Radha Soami Satsang Beas Society, a charitable trust. The Society’s constitution and rules and regulations were drafted by Maharaj Ji personally. His initiative in this regard established the governance structure that now governs the Dera and its operations.
The Radha Soami Satsang Beas (RSSB) organization has branches all over the world and is now a global non-profit, charitable association. Its goals are quite clear: to disseminate the group’s spiritual wisdom, conduct regular Satsangs and sermons, give spiritual seekers food and shelter, print pertinent material, and assist the operation of a free hospital adjacent to the main office in Bea, Punjab, India.
