Neeraj Chopra Career

Early Career

His father registered him in a gym in Madlauda after local children taunted him about his childhood weight; he was then enrolled in a gym in Panipat. He also went to the adjacent Panipat Sports Authority of India center, where Jaiveer Choudhary, a javelin thrower, discovered his early talent. Observing Chopra’s ability to throw a 40-meter javelin without any prior training and impressed by his drive, Choudhary became his first coach. Chopra, 13, was admitted to the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula, four hours from his home, after a year of training with Choudhary. The sports complex was one of just two synthetic runway facilities in Haryana at the time. He trained there under instructor Naseem Ahmad, who pushed him to run long distances in addition to throwing the javelin. During his time at Tau Devi, he was known for throwing distances of around 55 meters. He quickly expanded his range, winning the 2012 junior championships in Lucknow with a new national record throw of 68.40 meters. He competed in his first international competition the following year, the World Youth Championships in Ukraine. In 2014, he received his first international medal, a silver, in the Youth Olympic Qualification in Bangkok. At the 2014 senior nationals, he threw over 70 meters for the first time, followed by a world record throw of 81.04 meters in the junior category at 2015 All India Inter-University Athletics Meet, which was his first throw of over 80 meters. Chopra was called back for a national-level training camp in 2015, and he moved from Panchkula to NIS Patiala in early 2016. With a throw of 84.23 meters, he equaled the Indian national record and won gold in the 2016 South Asian Games.

Induction into the Army and 2016 Junior World Champion

Chopra won gold and set a world junior record of 86.48 meters at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He did not, however, qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics because the deadline was July 11, the week before the U20 championships. The Indian Army offered Chopra a direct appointment as a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Rajputana Rifles with the rank of Naib Subedar, a position not commonly granted to athletes, who are usually recruited as non-commissioned officers (NCO). He left the NIS Patiala in September 2016 to train at the Sports Authority of India’s Bengaluru facility. In December 2016, he was formally admitted as a JCO, and he was granted leave to finish his training.

2017–2021 Career

With a throw of 85.23 meters, Chopra won gold at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships. He set a season-best effort of 86.47 meters in the men’s javelin throw at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, becoming one of the few Indian athletes to win a gold medal on their Commonwealth Games debut, as well as the first Indian to win the javelin throw at the Games. With a throw of 87.43 meters at the Doha Diamond League in May 2018, he beat the national record for the second time.

Chopra made his Asian Games debut in August 2018, representing India at the 2018 Asian Games and serving as the Indian contingent’s flag-bearer during the 2018 Asian Games Parade of Nations. He won gold in the Men’s javelin throw at the 2018 Asian Games on August 27, throwing a distance of 88.06 meters, breaking his own national record and setting a new Indian national record. It was also India’s first gold medal at the Asian Games in the javelin throw. Chopra was the sole track and field athlete nominated by the AFI for the country’s highest sports award, the Khel Ratna, that year, but was instead honored with the Arjuna Award in September 2018.

Chopra underwent surgery in Mumbai on 2 May 2019, the day after the qualifying competitions for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics began, due to an elbow injury. Chopra traveled to South Africa in November 2019 for training under German biomechanics expert Klaus Bartoneitz after a period of recuperation that included meditation and rehabilitative therapy at Patiala and the IIS Vijayanagar. Gary Calvert, Werner Daniels, and Uwe Hohn had already trained him. After a 16-month layoff, he returned to international competition in January 2020, winning the Athletics Central North West League Meeting in Potchefstroom, South Africa, with a winning throw of 87.86 meters, qualifying him for Tokyo.

Chopra spent the next year in India, training at the NIS Patiala, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chopra shattered his own national record with a new throw of 88.07m on March 5, 2021, putting him in first place in the world. Chopra was authorized to fly to France with his coach after weeks of trying to acquire a travel visa, which he described as frustrating. He began his 2021 international season with a gold medal-winning throw of 83.18 meters in a competition in Lisbon, Portugal, but he skipped the World Athletics Continental Tour and the Diamond League event in Gateshead to relax and prepare for the Olympics.

2020 Tokyo Olympics

Chopra made his Olympic debut in the 2020 Summer Olympics, representing India. Chopra topped his group and qualified for the final in the men’s javelin throw with a throw of 86.65 meters on 4 August 2021, despite the effects of jet lag after flying to Tokyo from Sweden and an interrupted sleep routine due to regular dope-control testing. Chopra’s strategy for the final, which he created with his coach Bartonietz, was to rely on his speed and put pressure on the rest of the field with a powerful long throw. Chopra was competing against more experienced and better-performing competitors, like Johannes Vetter of Germany.

Chopra won the gold medal in the final with a throw of 87.58 meters, becoming the first Indian Olympian to win a gold medal in athletics and the first Indian Olympic medalist in athletics after independence. He also became the second Indian to earn an individual Olympic gold medal, after Abhinav Bindra, who won the men’s 10-meter air rifle gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Chopra dedicated his win to sprinters Milkha Singh and P. T. Usha.
