Manpreet Singh Sandhu, an Indian field hockey player, was born on June 26, 1992, and has been the captain of India’s men’s national field hockey team since May 2017. Manpreet Singh was born into a farming family in Mithapur village, Punjab, India, on the outskirts of the city of Jalandhar. On December 16th, 2020, Manpreet married Malaysian Illi Najwa Saddique in Punjab, India. He first met her in 2013, when she was a member of the Indian squad that won the Sultan of Johor Cup.

Manpreet Singh began playing hockey at the age of nine, inspired by his older siblings (particularly, the awards they won) and Pargat Singh, a former Indian Hockey team captain from Jalandhar. Despite his mother and brothers’ strong objections owing to injury worries, he never hesitated in his desire to participate in the sport. While his siblings’ achievements inspired him, it was an award of Rs. 500 that he received that allowed him to pursue a career in hockey with his family’s blessing. Father’s death during 2016 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

He received news of his father’s sudden death a few hours before the 6 April 2016 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup opening match, which India won 1-2. He missed the next Australia vs India match on 7 April 2016 as he returned to India to perform death rituals for his father. Australian players observed a minute’s silence while wearing black armbands to show support for Manpreet. In his absence, India suffered a 5–1 defeat. His mother advised him to return to the field and play in order to fulfill his father’s desire of giving his all for the national pride. On 10 April 2016, he returned to the team to compete in the following Canada against India match, which India won by a score of 1–3. From 2017 onwards, Captain of India

On May 18, 2017, he was named captain of India’s hockey team for the three-nation invitational tournament in Germany, which began on June 1, and the World League Semi-Final in England, which began on June 15.
